Birdland Community Garden
Planting Seeds - Building Community Spirit
The mission is to provide space for citizens to garden together – to create a shared vision, to work
collaboratively, and to cultivate a place for inter-generational and inter-cultural interactions with
individuals, seniors, families and friends to learn about and to experience the rewards of gardening.
We are committed to promoting healthy eating habits by encouraging home gardening activities which
will help to foster healthy community pride.

What We Are Working On
The Society has partnered with the HRM's Community Garden program. This project will create opportunities for inter-generational and inter-cultural residents in the community to develop new skills and capacities. With new development in the area the Society is reaching out to new residents, including newcomers, to encourage community involvement and active participation in growing household food.
The Society is made up of diverse people including individuals, seniors, families, and residents impacted due to socioeconomic reasons. As part of the programming, we have allotted four garden beds to be designed specifically for ability-challenged individuals and seniors, and two garden beds will be created for non-profit meal programming groups for free.
Bed Allocation
A random computer-generation selection process will allocate garden beds and each year new members will have a higher chance of securing a garden bed in comparison to previous garden members.
Social considerations of health have been addressed and will continue to be assessed as feedback before
and after the establishment of garden beds. We work with HRM to ensure we are good stewards of the site for the garden and undertake annual meetings with city staff to address any short and long-term issues brought up by the Society or community members.
